PLAQUE DESIGN

The Quay is a housing development in Dundrum, County Down. Steeped in history dating back to Viking raids, the Norman stronghold of Dundrum Castle, and the nearby Murlough National Nature Reserve - which became the first official nature reserve on the island of Ireland in 1967.

Home to some 40+ varieties of wetland birds, we were commisioned to celebrate this blend of nature and history with decorative house number plaques. Lending character and charm to each housing block, and connecting residents of The Quay with their local feathered friends.

Designing a sense of place.

Dundrum bay has been used as a port of some kind since the 10th century. Controlled by the Normans who constructed Dundrum Castle in 1177, the bay later became a commercial seaport in the early 19th century.

We decorated each plaque with a rope frame, nautical coordinates, and a date commemorating the construction of Dundrum Castle. These design elements provided an extra flavour and subtle nod to the history of the bay.

We explored a minimalist crocheted look, with a strong emphasis on recognisable silhouettes. Designs were produced in monochrome, so complex patterns were simplified to remain distinct and appealing.

We created 13 plaques in total, each featuring a unique bird illustration. UV-printed on Dibond aluminium composite sheets by Belfast-based print company MAD Colour.

"We commissioned Patrick to lift the image of our seaside development. He quickly grasped the brief, creating plaques that connected with the local community - giving each building an identity, adding detail and connection with the Quay. The community were impressed by his designs and we thank him for his work."
